Incorporation of fine root detritus into forest soil organic matter

چکیده

One of the principal inputs organic matter to forest soils is turnover tree fine roots, but process decomposition root litter and its conversion into stable soil (SOM) has received limited study. We labeled roots sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) with 13C traced label for 7 years four contrasting improve understanding this process. After we recovered an average 8.9% label, about two-thirds as coarse particulate one-third in microaggregates on silt clay particles. No differences recovery were detected between 1–2 3–4 order roots. Most (53–250 µm, 58%) was occluded within macroaggregates, fraction increased significantly from year 2 7, illustrating role detritus formation microaggregates. This most pronounced A horizon a higher pH (pH = 5.5) high iron oxide content. Conversely, lowest observed acidic, fine-textured Inceptisol (Cambisol—World Reference Base). estimate that annual input relatively fractions SOM represents 14% total accumulation these fractions; thus, our results support recent evidence only moderate contributor acid temperate soils.

Ryegrass - derived pyrogenic organic matter changes organic carbon and nitrogen mineralization in a temperate forest soil

Pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) is considered as a technique to improve soil fertility and store carbon (C) in soil. However, little is known regarding soil organic C and nitrogen (N) mineralization in PyOM-amended soils. To investigate the relationship between the C and N mineralization rates and the possible consequences in terms of C storage and N availability, we incubated ryegrass-derived ...

Soil incorporation of logging residue affects fine-root and mycorrhizal root-tip dynamics of young loblolly pine clones.

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations cover a large geographic area of the southeastern USA and supply a large proportion of the nation's wood products. Research on management strategies designed to maximize wood production while also optimizing nutrient use efficiency and soil C sequestration is needed. We used minirhizotrons to quantify the effects of incorporating logging residues into ...

Inorganic iodine incorporation into soil organic matter: evidence from iodine K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure.

The transformation of inorganic iodine (I(-) and IO(3)(-)) incubated in soils with varying amounts of organic matter (Andosols from the surface layer of an upland field and forest, as well as Acrisols from surface and subsurface layers of an upland field) was investigated by using the iodine K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). After 60d of reaction, both I(-) and IO(3)(-) were ...
